  • Susan Rovezzi Carroll, Ph.D.       

Susan received her doctoral degree from the University of Connecticut in 1981. While pursuing her Ph.D., she was awarded a research assistantship in the Bureau of Educational Research. Shortly after, she was named an Associate Professor,  teaching research methodology at the graduate and the undergraduate levels.  She has also taught management, marketing and program evaluation courses.

Dr. Carroll established Words & Numbers Research, Inc. in 1984. The firm provides strategic information for data driven decisions through surveys, focus groups and in-depth interviews. Dr. Carroll  has authored three books and numerous articles published in both peer review and trade journals. She has received awards for scholarship, business and leadership. Susan has been invited to speak throughout  the United States on various topics including marketing, healthcare, education, leadership, research and business.  (A complete resume follows this profile.)

  • David Carroll, MSW

David received his degree in 1977 at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work. While a student, David chose strategic planning and community organization as his areas of focus for academic preparation. David has conducted several large-scale program evaluations primarily in urban school systems including  School to Work initiatives, dropout prevention, remedial education, peer mediation / violence prevention.

Strategic planning,  needs assessments for community organizations and state agencies, and  grants writing are David's  areas of expertise.  He is a published author of three books and many journal articles,  and an excellent  presenter on topics realated to referendum and budget passage and marketing communications. Words & Numbers Research, Inc. - A consulting firm established in 1984. President and Founder.Conducted numerous surveys and evaluation projects which involved: original questionnaire design and/or test selection; individual and focus group interviewing; complete mail and telephone surveys; sampling strategies; data collection; coding data for computer entry into SPSS a statistics package; computer programming, de-bugging and execution; interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data; written and verbal reporting to non-academic audiences. Communicated with diversified groups of professionals, parents, and students. Several projects were multi-year in length, involved large numbers of subjects, and required multiple methods of data collection.

UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT. School of Allied Health. Associate Professor and Assistant to the Dean.Served on the Dean's Council (top management body where decision and policy making occurred in a collaborative format). Chief responsibility was leadership in all evaluation and research. A primary emphasis was the provision of data for decision-making and strategic planning. Conducted a large-scale evaluation of undergraduate programs, which serves as a model in Allied Health. (See publications listing.) Supervised all faculty and graduate research projects, and assisted with grants acquisition and publication efforts. Interfaced with faculty, administration, the public, as the information/research expert of the School. Taught graduate-level Research Methods and undergraduate Management courses. Designed a Program Evaluation course that is currently taught. Served on many committees and Task Forces. Enjoyed a 90 percent publication rate in referred journals. Numerous invited presentations.

 UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT.  Research fellowship.  Assisted in teaching Educational Psychology courses in statistics and research design. Provided statistics and research consultation to School of Education faculty and doctoral students. Test development. Executed computer programs (SPSS) and interpreted output for major research projects.

TRINITY COLLEGE. The Upward Bound program. Counselor and Assistant Director.Grants writing. Provided counseling, advising and college placement to 100 students in Hartford. Liaison to Hartford Public School Guidance Department, community agencies, and parents. Other responsibilities.

CENTRAL CT. STATE UNIVERSITY. Financial Aid Office. Assistant Director.Conducted student needs analysis for eligibility. Conducted resource analysis for financial aid. Designed and distributed financial aid packages for students. Interfaced with students parents, academic community, work-study employers, and federal government. Supervised staff.

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY. TRIO Program. Counselor.Counseled and advised 400 Hartford high school seniors per year on college placement and financial aid requirements. Public speaking. Liaison with high school guidance departments, community and colleges officers. Grants writing. Other duties.

UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT. Head Resident. Concurrent with pursuit of Master's Degree.Managed a large residence hall that was historically plagued with many problems. Supervised 6 resident assistants and 200 female residents.

Professional Expertise

Program evaluation: Monitored effectiveness of programs that serve children and families, juvenile delinquents, high school dropouts, structurally unemployed youth, elderly, low income housing residents, first generation college bound youth, multi-ethnic populations.

Needs assessments/ Feasibility studies: Conducted large scale studies on housing, education, employment and home care.

Training/Public speaking/Lecturing: Developed training modules (curriculum development). Presented numerous workshops as author of a book. Trained urban community leaders in grants wriitng skills, program evaluation and program development. Trained human service workers in social work methodology.
